Florencewasbornin1820sintosawealthy,Englishfamilywhowere,atthetimeofherbirthlivinginFlorence,Italy。Sheandhersisterhadalltheadvantagesthatmoneycouldprovide。Thisincludedprivatetutorsandasuperbeducationwhichwasnotgenerallyavailabletogirlsatthattime。FlorenceexcelledinScienceandMaths;howevertherewaslittleopportunityforhertouseherknowledge。Womenofherpositioninlifewereexpectedtogetmarriedandarrangeallthedomesticaffairsthatwereimportanttowealthyfamilies。But,Florencehadadreamtobecomeanurseandwhenherfatherrefusedtoallowhertotrainasanurse,shewassoupsetthatshebecameveryill。Eventually,herfatherrelentedandFlorencestartedonherjourney。ShevolunteeredtoworkinhospitalsinFranceandGermanyandeventravelledtoEgypttohaveformaltraining。Nurseswerenotconsideredtobeimportantorvaluableinthosedaysandhospitalsweregenerallyplacesthatonlypoorpeoplewouldgotooutofdesperation。Thestandardsofhygieneandmedicinewereverylow。Florencebegantochangeallthat。Ineveryhospitalthatsheworkedinshemadesurethateverythingwascleanandthatthepatientsthemselveswerewashedandwellnourished。

Florencehadbecomewellknownforallthewonderfulimprovementsthatshehadmadeandforthewayshehadtrainedotheryoungwomentobegoodnurses。WhentheBritisharmywasfightingintheCrimeaagainstRussia,thesoldierswereindesperateneedofmedicalattention。TheBritishcommanderintheCrimeahadheardofFlorenceandaskedherifshewouldcomeandhelp。SoFlorencecollectedsomeofherbestnursesandwenttotheCrimea。Conditionstherewereterrible。Therewasnowaterandnomedicalequipment。Florenceandherteamorganizedakitchenandalaundryandworkedincrediblyhardtoimproveconditionsfortheinjuredsoldiers。Atnightshewouldcarryalampasshewentroundthehospitalandthesoldiersstartedtocallher"theladywiththelamp"。Theywouldoftenkisshershadowasshepassedby。Florenceandherteamsavedthousandsoflivesandearnedtheloveandadmirationofhercountrymenandwomen。

In1860FlorencestartedtheNightingaleTrainingSchool。TheNightingalenurseswereindemandallovertheworld。SheadvisedtheAmericanPresidenthowtolookafterhissoldierswhowereinjuredintheCivilWar。ShewasaguidinginfluencebehindthefoundingoftheInternationalRedCross。In1907,shewashonouredbytheKingofEngland,EdwardV11andgiventhesgroupsofMerit。Shewasthefirstwomantoreceivethisaward。Shediedattheageof90onAugust10,19Florencecouldhavelivedalifeofluxuryandcomfort。Shesawaneedforsomeonetohelpthepoorandthesickandshedideverythinginherpowertoimprovethesituationandtomakeachange。Shethoughtlittleofherowncomfortandsheinspiredthousandsofyoungwomentobecomenurses。
